Unlike the actual solvent extraction system (a), in the system without an organic phase (b), metal ions adsorbed to the interface are likely to stay there because no extraction takes place. The metal ions trapped at the interface were observed using sum frequency generation (SFG ) spectroscopy with visible (Vis ) and infrared (IR ) pulse lasers, and the structure of the metal ions present at the interface were revealed (c).
