In this method, the contaminant plume distribution is estimated from limited concentration data by solving the unknown release history inversely. For three contaminants, the estimated plume distributions generally agreed with the concentration data (correlation coefficients (R) = 0.60−0.77). On incorporating a non-negativity constraint, the mean absolute errors between measurement and estimation decreased considerably.
