The first fuel cycle is a conventional one which recycles U and Pu used in commercial nuclear power plants. The second, transmutation fuel cycle, is a small scale one which recycles MA and long-lived FP such as I-129 in high level wastes generated from the first fuel cycle, and converts them into short-lived or stable materials.
