We sincerely thank you for your understanding and continued support for the research and development (R&D) activities of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA).
The mission of JAEA is to contribute to the welfare and prosperity of human society through nuclear science and technology. To achieve this objective, we are constantly engaged in R&D activities with safety as our top priority.
We are witnessing substantial changes pertaining to nuclear energy. In particular, the tidal shift toward realizing a decarbonized society is a great opportunity to usher in innovations in nuclear energy. JAEA will seize this opportunity to create a dynamic change and reinforce its steady contribution to society through a bold shift in thinking.
Therefore, JAEA has conceived a new vision since this April:
“Exploration of a New Future with the Synergy of Nuclear and Renewable .”
In particular, it defines the direction of our activities to achieve the national policy of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The vision comprises three main themes: “Pursuing synergy with renewable energy,” “Making nuclear energy itself sustainable,” and “Widely applying nuclear technology” we simply summarize these themes as “Synergy,” “Sustainability,” and “Ubiquitous” respectively.
With regard to “Synergy,” we have focused on the development of advanced reactors with high synergistic capability with renewable energy. Furthermore, regarding “Sustainability,” we have been working toward reducing the volume and toxicity of the high-level radioactive waste and recycling it, as well as steadily implementing the decommissioning of our facilities. This theme also includes supporting the decommissioning of TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. With regard to the third theme, “Ubiquitous,” we have been engaged in producing radioisotopes for cancer treatment and developing new materials using neutrons and synchrotron radiation generated at JRR-3, J-PARC, and other facilities.
In this publication, we offer the latest knowledge and findings obtained through R&D implemented by JAEA. We hope that the publication of this report will promote further understanding and garner support for the organization. Thank you for your continued support.
